Corinthian

If you want to see classic Greek architecture up close, but can't get out of the United States, simply head to your nearest government seat and chances are you'll find what you're looking for. Many examples, including the Missouri State Capitol, shown here, were based on the U.S. Capitol, in Washington, D.C. Classic architecture was used in part to signify permanence and authority as well as providing a timeless look.

The statue seen here is one of a pair that represents either the Missouri or Mississippi river, I could not find which was which in my research. More on that in a future edition of This Blog Title For Sale.

Earth Day 2006

Clouds over a Wisconsin farm. But look carefully, these are two different types of clouds. There are a few fluffy clouds at low levels, but then clouds that look like UFOs at a higher level. These are wave clouds, formed by mechanical lifting. Since there are no hills substantial enough to cause the lift of air here in Wisconsin, these must have formed when two layers of air "rubbed" against each other enough to produce the wave motion and lift necessary to form the clouds. And just as soon as they were formed, the air descends just on the other side to create these unusual shapes. I used to see these quite a bit while I was in Pennsylvania, but I rarely see clouds like these in Wisconsin.

Dominating

This is the Missouri State Capitol, in Jefferson City. I had the opportunity to take a series of pictures of this striking building, so consider this a preview of a series to come.

Last Week, At Bad Astronomy

Our friend Dr. Phil has been busy. He's kept it mostly in the solar system recently, talking about water on the moon, men on mars, heat on venus, and keeping the creationist critters at bay.

The Turkey Creek trestle along the Katy Trail. Near Jefferson City, Missouri.

I haven't the foggiest idea how that one girder could be damaged. Any guesses?

The Capital City Steakhouse

Jefferson City, Missouri. I witnessed a guy almost choke in here. Guy the next booth started choking on a piece of food. Fortunately his buddy saw what was happening and quickly administered assistance. Luckily, I was nearly done eating.

My Trusty Steed

This is a 1979 Cessna 172 airplane, tail N9002E, the very plane in which I am taking my flight lessons. She may not be much to look at, but as the saying goes, you dance with who brung ya. She's a nice plane to fly. I've had two full lessons thus far, so there's a way to go. I'll give periodic updates here, but if you want all the mind numbing technical details, head over to Rich's Quest For Flight. In the meantime, tailwinds!

Congratulations Wisconsin

Congratulations the the University of Wisconsin Men's Hockey team who just defeated Boston College by a score of 2-1 to win the NCAA Men's Hockey Championship in the finals held in Milwaukee. They now join the UW Women's Hockey team that won the NCAA Women's Hockey Championship a couple of weeks ago. Hey Minnesota, who woulda thunk Wisconsin would be tops in hockey, ya hey!

As Seen In Camera Toss

I'm pleased to announce that this photo was an editor's pic and was featured in Camera Toss (The Blog). It's a bit of an honor, to be sure. I need to get some more of these done.

Announcing Rich's Quest For Flight

In the not so distant past, life milestones for the ordinary person came and went without a whole lot of notice. Now, in the blog world, the word can be issued forth to a worldwide audience. Naturally there's no guarantee that the entire world sees this, in fact, this site's had just under 3000 hits in the nine months since I've started.

Anyway, to the purpose of this post. After many years, I finally have the opportunity and the resources to accomplish one of my life's goals. Starting Wednesday, I start down the path to earning my pilot's license. And to document the process, I have started a new blog, Rich's Quest For Flight. It'll be as comprehensive an account of the process as I can muster, serving two purposes. First, a personal journal made public, like most blogs, and second, to help future pilots following behind me.

It's quite a different purpose than this blog, which is why I started it. This Blog Title For Sale will continue with my photography, food reviews and poor attempts at wry wit. Thanks again to all of my loyal readers, and I look forward to serving you all for a long time to come.
