Here's Jeff Jarvis' latest rant on the assualt by the FCC on the First Amendment. Folks, this is serious stuff. Yet we hear more about conflicts overseas that will have much less long standing effect on us than the continuing erosion of our free speech rights. I will depart from Jeff's opinion on one point, though. What the FCC is in effect doing is marginalizing the media which it controls: broadcast radio and television. Those media will continue to fade in relevance as audiences shift to sources that are currently outside the FCC fiefdom. The FCC itself will diminish in power UNLESS they move to bring what they cannot control under its regulatory vice. We can only hope that by then an administration is in place that cherishes the democracy that the First Amendment guarantees.
